Challenge

Through My Eyes

To notice the hands that work, the rituals that repeat, the streets that remember, the land that feeds, and the quiet moments that disappear almost as soon as they arrive.

Solution

A Record of What Cannot be Explained

The final body of work became a visual journal of Art, Life and Land.

Rather than separating people from their surroundings, I allowed them to exist together.

Portraits sit beside landscapes.
Labour sits beside ritual.
Death sits beside renewal.
The ordinary sits beside the monumental.

The result is not an attempt to explain India.

It is an attempt to remember how it felt to stand there. Artboard 1

Looking Past the Obvious

Insights

Art carried memory.
Life carried movement.
Land carried everything underneath.

In Varanasi, I found devotion beside decay, ritual beside labour, death beside renewal. The photographs move through ghats, silk workshops, streets, people and objects, treating the city not as a destination but as something constantly becoming and disappearing. Artboard 1

Further away, the camera followed the hands that work the soil, the fields that wait for rain, the people who live with the land, and the landscapes that seem to exist outside of time. Artboard 1

Then came the coast and the mountains.

Different places.
Different lives.
The same feeling of being small beneath something much older.

Everthing Leaves a Trace

Everthing Leaves a Trace

A place is never only a place.

It lives in the hands that touch it.
In the feet that cross it.
In the objects left behind.
In the work repeated every morning.
In the people who remain when the traveller leaves.

The closer I looked, the less separate people and landscapes became.
